A recent study showed that the population increase and humans settling by the Columbia River has impacted the wildlife more than previously expected. Human impact includes increase in toxins the air, pollution, and increase in the hunting of fish and other wildlife. The Fish and Wildlife Program assumes that "a level base case of human development as do most fish and wildlife planning processes, including the Biological Opinion for the Federal Columbia River Power System" (Nwcouncil). Wildlife committees are also worried about that fact that "regional population is increasing, settling the landscape in new patterns, and converting land to new economic uses. These trends have unevenly distributed impacts throughout the basin with direct implications for fish and wildlife conservation, mitigation, and recovery” (NW Council).
